The Games Developer Conference is taking place so we’re going to hear various comments from those in the game industry, like EA’s chief operating officer John Schappert. Guy held a chat about Downloadable Content and noted that EA has been making a butt-load of money from it – $575 million last year and now hope for $750 million for this year.
“The fastest growing area of digital distribution — and that includes subscriptions and microtransactions — is downloadable content,” Schappert said. “It’s the extension of your current game through expansion packs and downloadable content.”
He’s speaking of the lump of money as a whole, so I wonder how much is made up from items sold at The Sims 3 Store…

Yeah, I heard this said by several industry insiders at a game conference I went to about two years ago. I actually think it kinda works for a game like the Sims (though the DLC there is still overpriced), but I HATE the way they’re implementing it in their RPGs. There’s this strong sense that the game you get in the box is not a whole game.
